What to put on a coupon

Four things every coupon needs

  • One clear offer

A fixed percentage, a fixed amount, or buy one get one. Anything the cashier has to interpret ("a free treat") turns into an argument at the counter.

  • An expiry date

A coupon without a date gets used "someday", which means never. Two to four weeks gives people a reason to come back this month.

  • Your business name

Big enough to read from a fridge door. The coupon travels: in a wallet, on a desk, handed to a friend.

  • How to use it

"Show this coupon at the counter" is enough. If it is one per customer or not valid with other offers, say so in the fine print.

Same printed coupon, plus a QR that works once

Paper coupons work. What they cannot tell you is how many came back. Add a unique QR code to each one and they can.

FAQ

Coupon template questions

  • Is this coupon template free?

The basic template is: your business name and the offer, as a PDF with 8 per page or a PNG, no account. The full version adds an expiry date, your logo, a picture and a QR code on each coupon that works once, with redemption counts. It starts with a 14-day free trial, or a one-time pack from $3.

  • How do I print coupons at home?

Download the PDF: it has 8 coupons on one A4 page with dashed cut lines. Print it on regular paper or thin card at 100% scale, then cut along the lines. On US Letter paper, choose "fit to page" in the print dialog.

  • What should a business coupon say?

Four things: the offer in a few words, an expiry date, your business name, and how to redeem it. Add the conditions (one per customer, not valid with other offers) in small print.

  • How long should a coupon be valid?

Long enough for a normal customer to come back, short enough that they do not forget. For coffee and food that is two to four weeks, for haircuts and services about one cycle, often four to six weeks.

  • How do I stop people from copying a printed coupon?

A plain printed coupon can be photocopied, and you cannot tell how many came back. If that matters, give every coupon its own QR code that works once: staff scan it at the counter, a second scan is refused, and you see the redemption count. That is what ReviewQR does.

  • Can I send the coupon by WhatsApp or email instead of printing?

The PNG works for a quick message. For coupons people forward to friends, a single-use QR version is safer, because each link redeems once and you can see which ones were used.
